Richard Ulrich: "Landscape, Fantasy and Sacred Geometry"

May 7 - June 18 / OPEN HOUSE FRIDAY, MAY 7, 4-8PM

From Mr. Ulrich:

An artist’s task is to create beautiful things that last a very long time. I use my traditional education in art and science to create works of landscape, fantasy and geometry. I primarily employ oil and acrylic paint, ink and colored pencil on canvas. Historic permanent colors, technique and media take center stage in these efforts. While firmly based in classic art, I constantly experiment with novel imagery and form.

I record my love of nature, wilderness and the back country with camera, often modifying the images on computer then transferring these to canvas. My goal is to express the beauty I experience in images of perspective, color, drama and lighting. I employ landscape as a base for visual experiments in geometry and a context for dream imagery. The visual challenge of fractals, the harmony of tiles and the vibrancy of contrasting color present a visual cadence I find most entertaining. My intent is not to copy what I see, rather it is to interpret and express what I experience and imagine in order to present the viewerwith images of beauty.

Siberian Elm Removal

December 4, 2020

On December 4th the enormous Siberian Elm behind Starkweather was taken down. It was quite an involved operation because every piece of the tree had to be craned over top of the carriage house and power lines. Several hollow or cracked/split branches were found, as were several large bolts/steel rods and steel cable that had been used in the past to reinforce splits and weak points in the tree. Additionally, the bottom of the trunk was found to have a substantial amount of rot at its center. The work was done by A Plus Tree Service, who did a great job. The largest sections of the tree were saved, to be milled into lumber. Special thanks to Four County Community Foundation, who awarded us a grant that helped pay for removal of the tree, as part of a larger effort to renovate the Starkweather garden.

We sincerely thank the MCACA and NEA for their support, along with Governor Whitmer, State Senator Pete Lucido and State Representative Doug Wozniak.
